South Bass Island and the Village of Put-in-Bay on it’s northern end are filled with family fun, party spots, shopping, music, dining, and events.  From their annual music festival to art and historic festivals there is always something happening on this friendly Lake Erie Island.

The village of Put-in-Bay is a popular tourist stop during the summer. The island is often referred to as the “Key West of Lake Erie”.  Put-in-Bay is served by ferry from nearby Port Clinton, Sandusky and Lorain, Ohio. Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial, including Perry’s Monument commemorating the Battle of Lake Erie is located on South Bass Island. The island is also the annual host of numerous gatherings and festivals to include the Inter-Lake Yachting Association regatta known as Bay Week, the Put-in-Bay Music Festival, Classic Auto Parades, and many other events.  It is also often the host of historic “Tall Ships” that come to visit the islands.

Situated in the bay off Put in Bay is Gibraltar Island.  Gibraltar Island is home to the Ohio State University’s Stone Laboratory which conducts Great Lakes research and trains future teachers and scientists.  They offer training for both teachers and students, as well as regular tours and educational events.

Transportation to the island is provided by boats from Miller Ferry (departing from the northern point of Catawba Island), and the Jet Express (departing from Port Clinton, Ohio and Sandusky, Ohio).  You can also get to the islands by charter boat or plane, large party excursion boats from Cleveland, and private boat. The island has a small airport and numerous marinas.  A regular boat, the Sonny-S, transports people between Middle Bass and South Bass Islands throughout the tourist season.  The Jet Express provides transportation between Kelleys Island and South Bass Island.

Once you are on the island you can rent a bicycle, golf cart or scooter.  Bus and taxi service is also available and generally waiting at key locations on the island.

South Bass Island is an island in western Lake Erie, and a part of Ottawa County, Ohio in the United States. It is the southernmost of the three Bass Islands and located 12 miles (19.3 km) from the south shore of Lake Erie. It is the third largest island in the Lake Erie Islands.

South Bass Island is approximately 3.7 miles (6.0 km) long and 1.5 miles (2.4 km) wide and comprises 1,588.3 acres (642.8 ha). The island is 3 miles (4.8 km) north of the nearest point on the mainland (Scott Point on Catawba Island) and approximately 10 (18.5km) air miles NNE of Port Clinton, Ohio, and 14 air miles (26 km) NNW of Sandusky, Ohio. As of the 2000 census there were 631 residents on the island. The only incorporated community is the village of Put-in-Bay.
